Utopia 2000

Utopia 2000

Green ground, gray rocks
Red roofs. Thirty three families
So close they know each other.
Two years worth of Sundays
Yields deliberate living with
Common space.

Nancy shows us around.
Five new pups and
Plenty of friends. Happy
Kids playing simple games.
Scooter races over speed bumps.

Then she tells us about
Roy, the guy who was once
Bitten by a dog, and how
He made life so impossible
For his neighbors, who had
Three dogs, that they left.

“Shucks,” I think, without
Saying it, “shouldn’t Roy
Have been the one to get
Forced out?” Communal
Life goes only so far.
Fear outlasts community.
