9/11/06 – The Day America Changed
Complex mosaic swirls over flower-bearing
mourners who hit the pit as names flow, firefighters
sing, George and Laura stand, non-politically.
Obsessed by death, afraid to meet life head-on,
we’re trapped, sequestered, bound by a police state
unrivaled since Stalin’s reign. It’s pipe-bags and
pipe bombs, Hummers and Katushas. Where have all
the flowers gone, media passing? Where have all the
hippies gone, long time ago? They’re buried on web logs
ton by ton, but never to be seen. A hundred thousand
come and scream just like 1970, but no one sees us now,
when will they ever learn? Buttons bob behind bright
banners, voices preach, but to each other. In the age
of black and white, the last elm left quietly emits gray.
